Report on the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme, June 2017

The report summarizes the activities of the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme (PECBMS) between January and June 2017. Thanks to the new grant from the European Commission (project „New Generation European Wild Bird Indicators“), PECBMS core activities could re-start again in 2017. The project, led by RSPB in cooperation with CSO will deliver standard supra-national species trends and indicators and will make them available at the web site.

Joint workshops of the 2-nd European Breeding Bird Atlas and the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme

Both meetings are designed as separate but closely related events, with some overlap in the agenda. Many participants will attend both meetings, therefore due to logistic advantages and time effectiveness, the meetings are organised at one place and back-to-back.

For venue capacity reasons and limited budget, the participation at both events is by invitation only!

EBBA2 workshop: 2nd – 3rd November

EBBA2 workshop:
The EBBA2 workshop will start on Monday 2nd November, so participants coming for that event should plan to arrive on Sunday 1st November or early Monday 2nd November. It will officially end by late evening on Tuesday 3rd November. On Tuesday afternoon, a joint session for participants of the EBBA2 and the PECBMS workshops is planned, see also programme of the workshops.

PECBMS workshop
The PECBMS workshop will start on afternoon Tuesday 3rd November with the joint session for participants of EBBA2 and PECBMS workshops, so participants coming for that event should plan to arrive on Tuesday morning at the latest. The PECBMS workshop will continue from late morning Wednesday and will officially end by afternoon on Thursday 5th November. See the programme of the workshops.

Venue

Mikulov is small town situated in south-east part of the Czech Republic near to the border with Slovakia and Austria.

Both workshops are organised in the Hotel Eliška, address: 22. dubna 1000/28, Mikulov (main entrance), or Piaristů 1000/4, Mikulov (side entrance). Phone (hotel reception): +420 534 001 310. The reception desk works 24/7. Parking for hotel guess is for free.

Only a joint session of all EBBA, PECBM and EBP participants on Tuesday 3 November afternoon is held out of the Hotel Eliška in Kino Mikulov (Cinema, address Česká 160/4, Mikulov) which is approx. 15 min walking distance from Hotel Eliška.

Organised shuttle transport from Břeclav train station to Mikulov by minibuses
We have organised shuttle minibuses to get to Mikulov easily from the Břeclav train station on Sunday 1 November and Monday 2 November evening.
In similar way, we offer to help you with your departure on Thursday 5 November afternoon and Friday 6 November. In case you are interested to use a minibus, please fill in the FORM where you specify the date and time of the minibus.

Shuttle minibus details: At the Breclav train station, member of CSO organizing team will be waiting for you at the station hall and will help you to get to a minibus. A person will hold a sign „WORKSHOP“. In case you don´t see the person for various reasons, please wait in the hall, the person can be just on the way to pick you up. In emergency cases, call the organizing team (mobile phone numbers: +420 604 592 876 or +420 774 502 804).

Participants who arrive on Sunday later then at 21:00 and will have difficulties in getting to Mikulov, there is an option to take taxi from Breclav to Mikulov. Taxi is usually standing in front of the Breclav station hall.

Accommodation

Participants attending both the EBBA2 and the PECBMS workshop will be preferably accommodated in the Hotel Eliška during both meetings. Accommodation in a twin room (2 persons per room) in the Hotel Eliška is sponsored by the workshop organiser. However, the cost of accommodation in a single room is NOT sponsored, so participants requesting a single room should expect to pay the single room themselves (the price for the single room is approx. 650 CZK (approx. 25 EUR).
The number of rooms available in the Hotel Eliška, especially single rooms, is limited. Therefore, participants attending the PECBMS and/or the EBBA2 workshop who require the accommodation sponsored by the organisers (a twin room) will be accommodated as a matter of priority in the Hotel Eliška. Participants who prefer a single room may be accommodated in Eliška hotel too in case of spare rooms but will be accommodated in the the Hotel Réva (single room approx. 945 CZK – approx. 35 EUR incl. breakfast), in case the capacity of Hotel Eliška is full.

Meals

All day meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner and coffee breaks) will be organised in the Hotel Eliška. Only the participants accommodated in the Hotel Réva will have their breakfast in their hotel but lunches and dinners in the Hotel Eliška. Specific food requirements (vegetarians etc.) will be arranged on request (to be specified in the online registration form).

Meals during the workshop covered by the organsers: first meal is breakfast on Monday 2nd November and last one breakfast on Friday 6th November.

Social event

Social event in a traditional wine cellar in the Hotel Eliška is organised for participants of both the EBBA2 and the PECBMS workshop on Tuesday 3rd November.

Birdwatching

No excursion is organised during both workshops. There is an option to do morning birdwatching right in the Mikulov town (where is a very good chance to observe e.g. Syrian Woodpecker) or do the independent birding trip before or after the workshops. You can visit many places attractive for birdwatching around the town, e.g. three IBAs: Nové Mlýny reservoirs (waterbirds and geese), Pálava hills (raptors), Confluence of the Morava and Dyje rivers (raptors like White-tailed Eagle, Red Kite (winter roosting site), Imperial Eagle, Saker). Interesting places for birding are also easily accessible in Slovakia, e.g. Hrušovská Zdrž reservoir (various waterbirds and raptors) etc.

Visa

Czech Republic is a part of European Union and Schengen Area.
Please, make sure whether you need visa to enter the Czech Republic. Participants who need an official invitation (or any other document) for visa, please contact Jana Skorpilova on skorpilova skorpilovabirdlife.cz as soon as possible. A process of issuing visa can take time and last minute applications usually do not work.

Funding information

At both the EBBA2 and the PECBMS workshops, the accommodation in twin rooms (2 persons per room), all day meals and social event are sponsored by the organisers. This applies to official workshop dates only.
The accommodation in single rooms (1 person per room) is NOT sponsored and so participants requesting a single room should expect to pay the all costs of the single room themselves.
The travel costs have to be covered by the participants. For participants from less wealthy countries, the organisers offer to cover their travel costs, for both the EBBA2 and the PECBMS workshop. However, the budget for travel costs is limited in both events, so participants requesting funding for their travel costs are asked to contact organisers individually. Please, specify your requirements in the first registration form.

Important info: Participation at both events is by invitation only!
Capacity of the venue and the budget are limited. For that reason, we are unfortunately able to invite (at a maximum per a country): ideally 1 person for the EBBA2 workshop and 1 person for the PECBMS workshop (exceptions to be discussed with organisers).
Therefore, you firstly submit the first and concise online registration form (link above). The submission will be confirmed by the organisers. All the workshop registration forms will be then reviewed in the second week of September and your participation at the workshop(s) will be finally confirmed as soon as possible.

Together with the final confirmation, you will receive second registration form, where you complete details on transport, accommodation etc. by 30th September 2015.

PECBMS workshop
The PECBMS workshop will start early on Monday 6 February, so participants coming for that event should plan to arrive on Sunday 5 February. It will officially end by late evening on Tuesday 7 February.

On Wednesday 8 February, an all day field trip for the participants of the PECBMS workshop is planned. The return to Mikulov is planned for late afternoon (ca at 5 p.m. at the earliest), so attendees taking part in the field trip should plan to leave late in the evening or next day on Thursday 9 February.

BiE3 kick-off meeting
The BiE3 kick-off meeting will start early on Thursday 9 February, so participants coming solely for that event should plan to arrive on Wednesday 8 February. It will end by early/mid afternoon on Friday 10 February, so that attendees can travel home for the weekend.

Mikulov is a beautiful small historical town situated in south-east part of Czech Republic near to the border with Slovakia and Austria.

Participants attending BOTH the PECBMS workshop and the BiE3 kick-off meeting will be accommodated in the Eliška Hotel (http://www.hoteleliska.cz) during both meetings.
Accommodation in a twin room (2 persons per room) in the Eliška Hotel is sponsored by the workshop organiser. However, the cost of accommodation in a single room is NOT sponsored, so participants requesting a single room should expect to pay the single room themselves. The price for the single room is ca 600 CZK (ca 24 Euro). The number of rooms available, especially single rooms, is limited.

BiE3 kick-off meeting
Participants attending ONLY the BiE3 kick-off meeting will be accommodated in the Galant Hotel (http://www.galant.cz).
Accommodation in a twin room (2 persons per room) in the Galant Hotel is sponsored by the meeting organiser. However, the additional cost of accommodation in a single room is NOT sponsored, so participants requesting a single room should expect to pay the single room supplement themselves (ca 525 CZK or 21 Euro per night).

Food

Meals are sponsored by organisers at both the PECBMS workshop and the BiE3 kick-off meeting. Foods for participants with specific requirements (vegetarians etc.) will be arranged on request, please notify your requirements in the registration form.

PECBMS workshop
Participants attending PECBMS workshop will have breakfast, lunches and dinners organised in the Eliška Hotel. The subset of these participants who will also attend the BiE3 kick-off meeting will continue to still have breakfast in the Eliška Hotel during the BiE3 meeting, but lunch and dinners in the Galant Hotel.

During the PECBMS workshop, first meal is breakfast on Monday 6 February and last one is breakfast on Wednesday 8 February. A cold lunch (packet) will be prepared for the PECBMS workshop participants who will attend the field trip on Wednesday 8 February.

During the BiE3 kick-off meeting, participants accommodated in the Eliška Hotel have breakfast on Thursday and Friday served in the Eliška hotel, but lunch and dinner on Thursday and lunch on Friday are served in the Galant Hotel.

BiE3 kick-off meeting
Participants attending just the BiE3 kick-off meeting (i.e. those staying in the Galant Hotel) will have all their meals in the Galant Hotel. First meal is breakfast on Thursday 9 February and last meal is lunch on Friday 10 February.

On Wednesday 8 February evening, all participants of the BiE3 kick-off meeting (i.e. staying in both hotels) are invited for a welcome drink with a buffet dinner in the Galant Hotel.

Social event

PECBMS workshop

A social event (most likely in the traditional wine cellar of the Galant Hotel) will be organised only for participants of the BiE3 meeting on Thursday 9 February. More information will be added later.

Excursion

PECBMS workshop
All day field trip is organised only for participants of the PECBMS workshop on Wednesday 8 February. The exact places of excursion will be specified according to the weather and birds.

Around the town there are many places attractive for birdwatchers, e.g. 3 IBAs: Nové Mlýny reservoirs (waterbirds and geese), Pálava hills (raptors or sometimes wintering wallcreeper), Confluence of the Morava and Dyje rivers (raptors like White-tailed Eagle, Red Kite (winter roosting site), Imperial Eagle, Saker Falcon). Interesting places for birding are also easily accessible in Slovakia, e.g. Hrušovská Zdrž reservoir (various waterbirds and raptors) etc.

Beside birdwatching during the excursion, you can do birding right in the Mikulov town where is a very good chance to observe Syrian Woodpecker.
