Monitoring

Present schemes
  • German Common Breeding Bird Survey: The programme started in 2004 and completely replaces the "Monitoring Programme for Common Birds" in Germany from 2011 on. It is based on line-transect mapping in spring on randomly chosen square plots of 100 ha.

  • German Rare Breeding Bird Survey: The programme includes all non-common breeding bird species, from irregular to widespread scarce bird species as well as colony-nesting species. It is based on the mapping and recording of territories, breeding pairs or nests on free selectable plots or census areas. The programme will start in 2011 and gradually replace the former programme in the next years, based on surveys in the federal states.

Previous schemes
  • Monitoring Programme for Common Birds: The former monitoring programme started in 1990 and run out in 2010. It used point counts on line transects and territory mapping on free selectable routes and plots.

Rheinwald, G. (1993): Atlas der Verbreitung und Häufigkeit der Brutvögel Deutschlands - Kartierung um 1985. Schriftenreihe des DDA 12, Bonn.

Census period: 1980-1989, focus on 1985. Method: semiquantitative maps for all breeding bird species generated from data collected by different methods and at different grids to UTM grid.

Ongoing atlases
Census period: 2005-2009. Method: semiquantitative mapping of rare and scarce breeding birds on topographical maps 1:25.000 and estimates of present breeding numbers. For common species counts in randomly chosen 1 x 1 km squares by the German Common Breeding Bird Survey and calculation of population densities. The atlas will be published by end of 2012.
