Project title: Urban bird monitoring in Bosnia & Herzegovina

Country: Bosnia & Herzegovina

Summary of the project: In Bosnia & Herzegovina, the project Urban bird monitoring will be implemented by the Ornithological Society Naše ptice. The initiative will establish the country’s first structured monitoring of bird populations in urban environments. The project will train volunteers and organise systematic surveys in major cities, creating the first baseline dataset on urban bird populations in the country. Status: Ongoing.

Project title: Publishing the First Breeding Bird Atlas of Armenia

Country: Armenia

Summary of the project: In Armenia, the project Publishing the first atlas on breeding birds of Armenia, led by BirdLinks Armenia, will result in the country’s first comprehensive breeding bird atlas.
The atlas will synthesise more than two decades of monitoring data and analyse the distribution, population size, and trends of 242 breeding bird species across the country. Beyond producing an important reference publication, the project will strengthen cooperation with national authorities and support the long-term development of bird monitoring in Armenia.

Project title: Breeding bird monitoring in ‘northern’ Cyprus to complete island-wide coverage, including for localized Calandra Lark & Audouin’s Gull, in cooperation with KUŞKOR

Country: Cyprus

Read project report here.

Summary of the project: BirdLife Cyprus in cooperation with the Turkish Cypriot bird protection society, KUŞKOR, propose breeding bird monitoring in ‘northern’ Cyprus to complete island-wide coverage, including for localized Calandra Lark & Audouin’s Gull. Aim is to build long-term island-wide monitoring. by filling gaps in on-going systematic field monitoring activities in Cyprus north of the dividing line, where existing funding will not cover personnel expenses or operational costs. This will complement on-going data gathering and assessment work by BirdLife Cyprus for reporting under ‘article 12’ of the EU Birds Directive. The monitoring will follow the methodologies used under established BirdLife Cyprus programmes and will focus on key breeding species such as Roller, and on species largely on wholly restricted to ‘northern’ Cyprus, such as Calandra Lark, Raven and Hobby.

Status: finished.

Mapping of breeding birds in Serbia. EBCC archive

Project title: National atlas of Serbia. Survey of poorly known forest birds and the first census of Collared Sand Martin (Riparia riparia) colonies in Serbia.

Country: Serbia

Read project report here.

Summary of the project: With this project we plan to increase field effort for the ongoing work on the first Atlas of breeding birds of Serbia as well as to increase the knowledge of rare forest bird species and regionally decreasing Collared Sand Martins (CSM). CSM were never nationally surveyed so far. We will also use this opportunity to additionally train old and new field assistants for new surveys in future as well as for The Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme which is ongoing.
