EBCC to support bird monitoring projects in Armenia and Bosnia & Herzegovina

March 9, 2026 | Marina Kipson

The European Bird Census Council (EBCC) will support two important initiatives in Armenia and Bosnia & Herzegovina through its Small Grant Fund (SGF). The scheme aims to strengthen bird monitoring activities in European countries where financial and technical capacity for large-scale monitoring programmes is often limited.
These projects will contribute to improving knowledge about bird populations and supporting evidence-based conservation across the region.

Urban bird monitoring in Bosnia & Herzegovina

In Bosnia & Herzegovina, the project Urban bird monitoring will be implemented by the Ornithological Society Naše ptice. The initiative will establish the country’s first structured monitoring of bird populations in urban environments. The project will train volunteers and organise systematic surveys in major cities, creating the first baseline dataset on urban bird populations in the country. The data collected will also contribute to national and European monitoring frameworks coordinated by EBCC.

Publishing the First Breeding Bird Atlas of Armenia
In Armenia, the project Publishing the first atlas on breeding birds of Armenia, led by BirdLinks Armenia, will result in the country’s first comprehensive breeding bird atlas.
The atlas will synthesise more than two decades of monitoring data and analyse the distribution, population size, and trends of 242 breeding bird species across the country. Beyond producing an important reference publication, the project will strengthen cooperation with national authorities and support the long-term development of bird monitoring in Armenia.

Supporting Bird Monitoring Across Europe
EBCC’s Small Grant Fund was established to support national bird monitoring activities, particularly in countries where resources for such work are limited. Small grants can provide crucial support for starting new monitoring schemes, maintaining existing programmes, or producing national bird atlases. The implementation of the Armenian and Bosnian projects has been made possible thanks to the generous support of donors who contribute to the EBCC Small Grant Fund. EBCC warmly thanks all individuals and organisations whose donations help strengthen bird monitoring and conservation efforts across Europe. Their support enables local partners to generate the high-quality data needed to guide conservation policy and protect bird populations for the future.

EBCC will continue to share updates about the progress and outcomes of these projects through its website and newsletter.
