News from the EBCC Small Grant Fund: we obtained funding for two projects

February 6, 2024 | alena.klvanova

In 2023, the EBCC established a Small Grant Fund (SGF) with the aim to support national bird monitoring activities by EBCC partner organisations, particularly in low- and middle-income countries in Europe. Six projects were selected as priority for support in autumn 2023 and we have asked the wider community for donations.

We are very grateful to the Swiss Ornithological Institute, BirdLife Denmark, the Catalan Ornithological Institute and several private donors for their contributions. The donations, supplemented by some extra money from EBCC’s own resources allows us to support two projects. The Board had an extremely difficult role to select the projects which will receive support from the SGF this year. Finally, it decided to support the projects ‘Breeding bird monitoring ‘across the divide’ in Cyprus, to cover the ‘northern’ part of the island and complete island-wide coverage’ and ‘Support for Common Bird Monitoring (CBM) and Breeding Bird Atlas in Bulgaria’. In the case of the Cyprus the Board especially valued the collaboration of two organisations across a political divide, in Bulgaria the approach to make use of synergies between projects to cover financial gaps.

As the first year of the SGF scheme shows, there are good projects in Europe which need support. Contributions to the SGF are welcome at any time. A new call for projects will be announced in spring 2024.
