At the EBCC conference in Riga, we welcomed three new enthusiastic Board members. We wish to express our gratitude to Mattia Brambilla (Italy), Dimitrije Radišić (Serbia) and Nicholas Strebel (Switzerland) for their decision to join the EBCC Board, and help us guide the work of the EBCC in the upcoming years. First, we would like to introduce you to Mattia Brambilla, his reserach background and what he hopes to achieve within his first term as a Board member.

In May, we received heartbreaking news about the passing of our colleague Primož Kmecl, coordinator of the Slovenian monitoring of common farmland birds in DOPPS – BirdLife Slovenia. Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia was awarded in 2024 by EBCC for the project "Survey of poorly known forest birds and the first census of Collared Sand Martin (Riparia riparia) colonies in Serbia".

The 23rd conference of the European Bird Census Council (EBCC), called "Bird Numbers 2025: Synergies in monitoring for conservation", took place from 31 March to 4 April 2025 in Riga, Latvia. The University of Latvia organised the conference with support from the Latvian Ornithological Society.

BirdLife Cyprus has been running long-term bird monitoring schemes for well over a decade, with some programmes ongoing since the 1980s. Unfortunately, however, the coverage of such monitoring schemes has been largely limited to part of the island.
